Feature Film 'Misgivings'

December 1, 2024  ·

DIRECTORS STATEMENT 1ST December 2024

With Misgivings, my goal was to create a film that transcends labels and resonates on a universal level. I wanted to craft a story that doesn’t rely on flashy special effects, predictable clichés, or worn-out stereotypes. Instead, I aimed for something more subtle, something that feels timeless. A film that could quiet the mind, stir the soul, and maybe even leave you with a lingering sense of unease. I wanted the audience to experience something more than just a narrative—I wanted to evoke emotion, to connect deeply with the rawness of the characters, and to leave space for reflection.

Working with an incredible cast from across the country, representing diverse stages of their careers, brought a richness to the film that I could not have imagined. Their dedication and authenticity were vital in shaping the essence of each character. For me, it was never just about the lines they spoke; it was about the spaces in between. How a character’s eyes could tell a story without a word being uttered. How a fleeting smile can carry the weight of years.

In particular, it was important for me to bring the inner world of Suze, our protagonist, to the forefront. Her journey is one of emotional complexity, navigating feelings of despair, inner conflict, and quiet longing. Yet, amidst that turmoil, I also wanted to showcase the glimmers of hope she experiences—through her connection with others, through moments of beauty in nature, and in the quiet strength that emerges when we least expect it. These moments of tenderness and human connection became the heartbeat of the film.

Ultimately, my hope for Misgivings is that it opens up space for empathy and understanding. That it encourages the audience to sit with the complexity of the human experience, to reflect on their own lives, and to embrace the moments of beauty that surround us all.
